The Portable Parking Lot…
I got my first CB radios in 1964. They were tube-type Hallicrafter CB3A units. My best friend made a deal and gave me two of the radios. We could talk many, many miles across the flatlands of the Texas Panhandle.
In those ancient days, CBs were very helpful and lots of fun, especially on trips. The language was clean (unlike much of today’s chatter) and our kids loved listening and sometimes talking on the air.
I remember lots of nicknames for various things. The few Interstates were referred to as Super Slabs. Trucks that hauled gasoline were known as Portable Gas Stations. Trucks that hauled cars were known as Portable Parking Lots.
I was reminded of all this by a response from a very good friend, Vickie Paver, from PA. I highly recommend a visit to her site http://www.paversnest.com/ Here are parts of her response.
“I read your article and thought about what I have been excited about lately. I belong to two prayer teams and get prayer requests from family, friends and other people I meet and people in our church.
But – how do I (or anyone else who has a busy schedule in this great ‘fast, fast paced’ world of ours stay plugged into God in prayer, worship, etc.?
God gave me a great idea last week. I said to myself “I don’t have time to pray for all these people (children with cancer, adults with cancer, people with diabetes, babies with tumors, etc.) I only have time to pray for those close to me right now.” Then I felt a little ashamed because so many people need prayer. But I always get this picture in my head that I have to find a prayer closet – somewhere that’s quiet!
The Lord said (not out loud), but to my spirit, ‘You can write them down and pray when you travel, pray when you have to wait at the doctor’s office waiting for tests to be done, and even pray on your short trips to town and back.’ Well, that is what I have been doing…. praying while on the run and praying while waiting. I have been so blessed. As you can tell, I am very excited about it! God has been answering so many prayers.
We have laptop computers and we do have satellite … so why not traveling prayer closets. He has made Himself available anywhere at any time. I guess we need to get the concept down into our hearts, that we can always remain ‘plugged-in’. I think the problem about our idea concerning God is that we either leave Him at church or we leave Him in our prayer closet at home when we should be taking God everywhere with us. He should be involved in every single aspect of our lives. You would think we should know that since the Holy Spirit actually lives in us.”
PapaJ here again. Vickie’s idea of a Portable Prayer Closet has great merit. It reminded me of a friend from my childhood. We met at age 10 and have stayed in contact all these years. She was a missionary in Africa for many, many years. I wanted a way to be reminded to pray for her regularly and often. God gave me the idea of praying for her every time I sat at a red light. All those years, I practiced the idea of the Portable Prayer Closet in my vehicle. What a concept.
Please visit Vickie’s site and let her know what you think of her idea. I’d enjoy hearing from you, too. Just use the “Leave a Reply” box below and I’ll get back to you. You can share your prayer requests and praise reports, too.
SOME SELECTED RESPONSES TO “TIM’S EASTER TESTIMONY”
– The article is GREAT. Please let Tim know HOW MUCH I enjoyed it and could sooooooooooooooooo relate As the ‘daughter of a preacher/pastor’ on one side of my family and the ‘great-granddaughter’ of a preacher/pastor’ on the other side of my family. So much of what he wrote brought back MANY memories.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again [that is, if you share any more of his stories].. He {Tim} has his Daddy’s way with words.
– WOW! Praise God
– What a wonderful testimony, Jerry. Bless his heart.
– What an absolutely wonderful testimony of Tim’s, Jerry! He truly gives faith and hope to people by his story. God’s blessings to him and you.
– I loved Tim’s testimony. Parts of it I could relate to for sure. How old is he now? What does he look like? I love all of your stuff but of course some pieces are more outstanding than others. Thanks for the inspiration you share. Thanks to Tim, also. God Bless.
– Super good this time! What a neat testimony! Thanks for sharing. If that can’t get a bee under your bonnet, I don’t know what could. Very encouraging!
– What a wonderful piece of writing. I’ll bet it was a powerful thing to hear. He is so right: the “son of the son of” shows that he was from a “good family”, but he still had to find his own way in the end and he did. At least he recognized that it was his choice no matter how many ancestors were preachers. God Bless both of you.
– Thanks, Jerry, for sharing Tim’s testimony. I was blessed. I have been blessed in many ways in holding you and your family as friends of mine, even though we haven’t been in touch much the last while. I will always hold fond memories of what Joyce meant to me. I can still picture her focusing in and taking interest in me personally at the table at your house, probably after a meal. I felt wanted and accepted at your place. She expressed something to the fact how God had things in control with me finding a mate.
Then the night I visited her in the hospital, she rallied. As I recall that was the night she went to her eternal home. I admit that her Homegoing caused me to question God. I couldn’t see why. It still brings tears to my eyes thinking about it.
By God’s grace, I believe he has allowed us to grow stronger……perhaps that is where faith comes in. What a blessing to see how your children pulled through that time, and are walking with Him now. Tim’s account does help me to see that God can use something that seems so bad and turn it into something wonderful. Although I didn’t get to know Pat as well, she also is a special lady, She also shows compassion. What a blessing for you two to be brought together. Trust all is going well in your new field of harvest. Appreciate you.
– Jerry, I loved your son Tim’s testimony. God is good! ALL the time!
– This was a beautiful story!
– I cried at Tim’s story. Joyce touched everyone fortunate enough to have known her in a big way, including me! I still laugh when I remember the bouncing Jell-O. I will forever think of her as Mary Poppins on her motorcycle. His best to you.
– The “inside” of son, Tim, must be lovely since he has Jesus in his heart, as Lord now. Very good testimony and I am sure it will speak to the readers who are just going thru the motions. This week the Lord moved into another area of my life, ever so gently. I can’t go into details, but it is wonderful to have the Lord working on me, bit by bit.
Thanks for the article! And yes, a cute baby picture AND your woodsy window scene was lovely. Did you find a good hair cutter yet?
– Good testimony from Tim. Enjoyed the part about Joyce leading the nurse to Christ… We may not know the rest of the story until we get to Heaven, but it gives us something interesting to look forward to.
– We enjoyed Tim’s testimony. Thanks for sharing it.
– Timmy’s message was a blessing and a good reminder to stay close to the Lord. I love the photos.
