Like A Doughnut…
Greetings all! I am so glad to be back and give you a quick update on Debbie. She is now five weeks past her operation for degenerating discs in her back. She is healing very well, slowly, but very well nonetheless. Thanks to all of you for your continued prayer support. I can tell you for certain that it has been appreciated and felt. All that to introduce this hippitty hop down another of my rabbit trails.
Several years ago I was having a particularly hard year. Compared to this last year it was a day on the playground, but at the time it was hard to find a reason to get up every day and go to work. I was at work one day, alone with my thoughts on my lawn mower and was thinking about the Lord’s Prayer. You see, when all you have for company during the day are mechanical objects, you have plenty of time to let your mind roam.
So I was thinking about the portion of the prayer where it reads, “give us this day our daily bread” and here is what came to mind. In that day and time bread was a staple of life and a very daily item. There were no preservatives and thus it had to be new and fresh each and every morning. That thought lead to the Old Testament and the manna that God provided each day for the children of Israel. If anyone were to collect more than they needed for each day it would spoil and rot overnight. The only time God gave permission to collect more than the days needs was in consideration of the Sabbath. Other than that it, they were required to take by faith that God would supply tomorrow’s needs when tomorrow came. Likewise the “give us the this day our daily bread” request is so fitting for my needy condition.
I find it very comforting that God does not give me a heads up as to what is coming in the future. If he did that, then I would be very prone to worry about how to deal with tomorrow’s problems and not trust Him for today’s needs. God has never given me His grace for tomorrow’s problems until it becomes tomorrow. At a local restaurant there is this sign, “Free beer tomorrow.” As you can guess, it is never tomorrow, it is always today. By the time tomorrow comes it has already become today. Therefore, God is always faithful to give me THIS DAY the daily bread I need.
Back to the daily bread thought, it was needed every day. Even if you had more than you needed for a given day, by the next day it was stale and not nearly as good as the fresh baked bread. It may have been still “technically” bread but given the choice, give me the fresh, warm, soft bread every time.
So how about this for an original thought, “God’s grace is like a donut.” I don’t know how many of you are fans of a fresh baked Krispy Kreme or maybe a powdered Bavarian cream Dunkin Donut, but I need to take a break to wipe the drool off the keyboard.
All better! If you have ever had one of those fresh bits of glorious delight, then you might understand this. God has promised to be there for us in all of life’s struggles. Jesus has said that we should take up His yoke, for His burden is light. That is no wonder, He is carrying ALL the weight. With promises like that why would we not eagerly look forward to each sunrise to partake of the fresh batch of Grace He has waiting for us? Some days all the grace I need to get through the day is a simple glazed donuts worth while other days it might be a three cruller day. The beauty of God’s grace is that He has it ready for us each and every day and it is always fresh and new and just what we need for that day. If you are given the choice between fresh and day old donuts, come on which are you digging into? I will be glad and grateful for a bag of day old donuts as opposed to no donut at all, but God is never stingy and always has what we need in stock.
So there you go, “God’s grace is like a donut.” What more would you expect from a guy who says life is like fish? Blessings to all of you and I hope to share some more moments of grace soon about Debbie’s surgery and how God was there in every moment of the five-day adventure.
Your fellow servant in HIS service, Tim Meyer
