GPS

One of the things I really miss about Florida is the abundance of parks I had near our home. There were many picnic tables at which I could sit while waiting for the Lord to bring someone along with whom I could share the Gospel. Sharing treats with my pet coon, Rocky, was an additional plus!

Since moving to Jasper, I’ve looked and looked for a picnic table that is accessible to me and near where people pass by. Real shortage of parks here as well as picnic tables! Maybe I will just have to look a bit harder.

I have found one that is quite decrepit and splintery. Cars and people do pass by, so guess it will have to do until I find something more comfortable.

While sitting there a few days ago, this huge, non-stretch limousine looking vehicle pulled in beside me. A man rolled the window down and asked me if I knew where he was. He said that his GPS (Global Positioning System) unit was out of calibration and he couldn’t figure out where he was.

Here was a man in an $80,000 car with a $5,000 GPS unit (my estimate) who didn’t know where he was. I was new to the area, driving an 8 year old Tonka Truck, but I knew where I was. Go figger!

Stories about GPS units have always fascinated me. They enable one to find out exactly where they are on the face of the earth within an inch or two. They’ve been used to track bad guys breaking the law. They enable our soldiers to home in on targets in a way that produces very accurate results. The GPS signal is bounced off a satellite or two and the results are usually very accurate. I’ve seen programs where Alpine climbers were able to pinpoint the location of a fellow climber and rescue them from certain death.

God ALWAYS knows exactly where we are and what we’re doing. There are times we probably wish He didn’t have that capability. We had lunch recently with new friends, Sue and Bob. After I related this story to them, Sue said that God has the “God Positioning System”. Doesn’t matter if we’re under the sea, anywhere on land, or in outer space. He knows where we are and what we’re doing all the time. It seems He even applies His technology to sparrows and hair follicles! Wow!

There are certainly times when WE don’t know where we are. We feel lost, forsaken, neglected, bereft, left out, sad, abandoned, etc. When clichés don’t do the trick and bumper sticker theology leaves us unchanged, isn’t it encouraging to know that He KNOWS? He knows our frame that we’re dust. He knows what we’re going through because He came to earth and went through “it” His GPS system is unfallible, unfailable, and unflappable.
