Breathing
Breathing. It is one of those things we do all the time but unless we are having a hard time doing it, we do it without even thinking. I remember way back when the actor, Robert Young, would do TV commercials for medicines, he would say, “I’m not a doctor, I just play one on TV.” I, too, am no doctor, nor do I play one on TV or anywhere else. So if I don’t have all the proper medical terms correct please forgive me. It is the idea that I am most concerned with presenting well.
The Gospel of Jesus is simple to hear much like breathing is to do. For anyone who might read this and has not yet accepted the free gift of eternal life, let me just recap for you. We as Christians are NOT perfect, but then neither are non-Christians. The Bible is God’s Word of truth to us for all the ages. There is no way to meet God’s standard of perfection on our own or by any amount of good works that we could ever do. Therefore without the free gift of Salvation offered to us by the death of Jesus, we would literally be “eternal TOAST!” Well let’s get back to the “ole rabbit trail.”
Breathing. Once or twice I have been told that I am too dumb to breathe. I was younger then, but now I realize how true that comment is and how it pertains to all of us. How often do you make a conscious decision to breathe? It just kinda comes naturally. You see, if it were not for the grand design of God, I know I would not always remember to breathe 8-12 times a minute, twenty four hours a day, 365 days a year. The way my mind works, I would find myself captivated by a sunset or a Bald Eagle in flight. It would be a safe bet though, at some time early in life I would have forgotten to breathe and poof I gone.
The heart is another vital thing to not forget. Do you ever forget to have your heart beat? Well, unless it stops or you have a problem with yours, you may have never thought of it. But even though you don’t think to tell your heart to beat, it does it anyway. Amazing!
In Psalm 139, King David wrote about how God knew him. How, no matter where he would or could go, God was there. The Psalmist also speaks of how God saw him in his mother’s womb and basically put him together in there. In verse 14 he says this, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works and THAT I know right well.” KJV Eugene Peterson in The Message does such a wonderful job in bringing this passage to life. “I thank you, High God—your breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration— what a creation.” I would encourage you read the rest of this Psalm from the Message. The Psalm finishes with these thoughts,“Investigate my life O God, find out everything about me; cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; see for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong— then guide me on the road to eternal life.”
In the Bible there is a passage that kind of wraps this whole thing up. In II Corinthians 6:2 the Living Bible says it his way, “For God says, ‘Your cry came to me at a favorable time, when the doors of welcome were wide open. I helped you on a day when salvation was being offered.’ Right now God is ready to welcome you. Today He is ready to save you.” A more familiar way you may have heard it is like this. Today is the day of Salvation. God is not willing for any to perish. Think about it but don’t wait for tomorrow, it just might never come.
